INTRODUCTORY

REFLECTION

Now listen, ladies, I’m excited to welcome you—but first, I need to be honest about how we arrived here. Yes, I mean WE, lol. Because you and I are here together. But let’s start with me first. I’ve been sitting on this thing for years. This "thing," among multiple other “things”, has been festering, boiling, and, as of right now, overflowing and pouring out of me. And I’m beyond excited to share this space with you.

Thorn & Bloom got its name from the story of my own life—the thorns and the blooms. The hard, sharp, painful parts I’ve endured have led to beautiful things blossoming within me. Right now, I’m in the middle of one of the most intimate transitions I’ve ever experienced with God. I’ve reached a place where I know who I am in Him, and I’ve realized that I cannot live this life without Him.

Here’s what I know for sure: God loves me. He loves me with all my imperfections, my thorns. And yet, He continues to plant seeds of grace in my life that allow me to bloom, even in moments when I feel unworthy. Sounds dramatic, right? I know—but that’s my truth, and I love that for me. And guess what? God loves you, too! All of you!

Now, back to the purpose - if you know me, you know I absolutely love flowers and plants. I’m an anthophile and phytophile at heart (nerd terms, I know!). My favorite flowers? Ranunculus, anemones, peonies, sunflowers, marigolds (love these in the fall), zinnias, and, of course, the English shrub rose.

Now that you know what flowers to buy me, let’s talk about roses and what they’ve taught me.

Roses are fascinating. Those sharp thorns, you see? They’re a natural defense mechanism, protecting the flower from predators while still showing off its stunning beauty. The thorns make it difficult for anything—or anyone—to harm the rose without paying for it.

So here’s the metaphor: Like roses, we carry thorns. Our thorns aren’t there to harm us, but to protect and refine us. They symbolize the challenges we face and the ways God shapes us into who He’s called us to be.

But let’s not forget the bloom. The bloom represents the unique beauty, grace, and purpose God has planted within us. Despite life’s difficulties, we are called to flourish, to thrive, and to reflect the fullness of God’s glory in our lives.

This is what Thorn & Bloom Collective is about—honoring both parts of the journey: the trials that strengthen us and the beauty that blossoms from them. Together, we’ll explore how God uses both our thorns and our blooms to create something extraordinary. In this space, we’ll grow in faith, love, purpose, and community.

And so now back to you. You’re here, and I’m so happy that you’re here! Welcome!

The Collective Reminder:

  • Thorns

Our challenges are not a sign of weakness but a reflection of God’s refining work in us.

  • Bloom

God calls us to thrive, not survive, as we grow into the fullness of our identity and purpose in Him.

  • Community

Through mutual care and encouragement, we help each other navigate challenges (our thorns) and celebrate beauty and growth (our blooms).

The Thorn & Bloom Book Club is designed to create a nurturing space where women can come together to explore themes of faith, identity, healing, and purpose through literature. It’s a space to reflect, share, and grow spiritually while strengthening the bonds of sisterhood.

What We’re reading?

This round of the Thorn & Bloom Book Club will feature bi-weekly, 2-hour meetings centered on Dr. Sarita Lyons's inspiring book Church Girl.

Dr. Lyons, a pastor, speaker, and theologian, brings a powerful voice to this work, helping women see themselves in scripture and embrace their God-given identity and purpose. Through biblical insights and personal reflections, Church Girl speaks to the heart of Black Christian women, addressing themes of healing, faith, and spiritual growth.

I love Dr. Lyons’ wisdom and grace and am thrilled to share this book. It’s written to empower, encourage, and show us how God’s Word speaks directly to our unique experiences.
